Building the Marble Machine in a text document - Better than I thought!
Experienced engineers has told me to write down what the Marble Machine should do, in text (Design requirements) This process has turned out to be way more fun and creative than I first thought. Starting from design requirements creates a solid foundation that I didn't have on the previous machines

The Marble Machine Drivetrain
Переглядів 137 тис.21 день тому
After studying how to improve my design process it's time to roll up the sleeves and actually start implementing what I´ve learned. In this episode I am trying to work from design requirements rather than just designing on a whim. It is not easy internalizing a brand new design sequence and sometimes I am still getting ahead of myself, but I think In general I have a much more grounded view: I ...
What is Moment of Inertia? (The Heart of The Marble Machine)
Переглядів 85 тис.Місяць тому
More Moment Of Inertia = Tighter Music! And yeah, i could have discussed a few things better in the video: I think the way to design a wheel like this would be to always leave the hub on the shaft and then just add the spokes/OD perimeter in pie sections, lets say 6 or 8 sections. So we are not disassembling the shaft and gearing/timing belt at all, we are just removing/adding stupid pieces of ...
Find the MAGIC - and bring it forward

I was emailing with an Industrial Design engineer from Apple who told me: "One thing I've learned that can really make a product great is to find the magic and bring it forward." I really love that concept and i think it´s essential for the Marble Machine that i allow the whimsical, artistic, non-engineering parts of the project blossom. Giant flywheel? YES! Combine this with a more strict more...

Making a Cardboard Model of the Marble Machine
Переглядів 104 тис.2 місяці тому
I’m making a cardboard model of the new Marble Machine, as a quick way to try different design options. I got the idea from the book ”How Big Things get Done” where the Planning Professor Bent Flyvbjerg recommends cardboard modeling as a low-tech, fast and cheap planning tool for complex projects. I never knew planning could be this much fun, I always thought planning was boring and uncreative....

The conceptual design is still an abomination. Dump the overly complex impractical Huygens drive. If necessary just convince yourself it’s only for the time being, Phase 1 say, and then just forget about Huygens. It will never be practical on tour even if you could get it to work in the lab. Don’t allow Huygens to be the killer of your project. You have been notified. Then pick one of the instrument sets, the vibraphone or drum set. Design it fully modular as a stand alone unit and for gods sakes already bend to the use of off the shelf servo drive motor, variable speed drive. Again, tell yourself you do this for the time being. Just do it this way to get on with development of the marble tracks, conveyors etc. Dump the god forsaken integrated drive at 45 degree angles. This will turn out to be a nightmare in and of itself. If you can successfully design/build/debug the first truly modular unit, much of the work can be used to develop the second instrument set. Eat a few baby elephants before you try to eat the mother of all elephants. You do not have enough time horizon to continue on the path you have currently chosen. Don’t be a failure. Get these machines separated to significantly reduce complexity and risk. Think about integration and synchronization of modules as you progress but that would be one of the last phases of your project. Use a truly modular and phased approach and don’t be a failure.

Assuming this is built and works brilliantly, I'm curious about the performance aspect, the interaction between the human performers and the machine. Is it functioning as a visually stunning playback machine? Will it solo, or improvise, or respond to the musicians? Can it "listen" in some way? I love the entire design process and the questions it raises. Kudos to Martin and also to all the insightful observations in the comments!

I believe Hannes is absolutely right. This project is not just about a machine. If it would be just about the engineering, there’s honestly much better channels about that on UA-cam. I’ve always been here just as much for the music and seeing this crazy dream come to life. If there ever will be a world tour, I’d like to come to a concert and see the band play _with_ the machine, not mostly a machine and some people kind of decorating it. The people and the interactions between them and the machine are, at least from my perspective, the _only_ thing making this entire project interesting and worthwhile.

People won't look at the wheel much if there are live people on stage. If the wheel is in the center and the people on the sides, I would look at the wheel a couple times but mostly be watching the people, because people are always doing new things. The wheel always just spins. Having the wheel behind the people means people will always be looking at it in the background - which is perfect. It looks about 3 meters tall and is a gigantic spinning wheel. We'll see plenty of it behind the people. And we will be looking at it MORE if there are people in front of it.

6:53 It seems to me that sliding the drum to minimize programming space isn’t a bad idea, but it seems super complex to take that concept into your build. An easier, yet less effective, method of getting longer music from one revolution is to use a scroll or belt instead of a wheel. If you want to change songs, you could even implement a belt switcher, so that you can have an hour or two of programmed songs on a series of stacked belts. What’s the end goal here? To play shows with the machine, or to make a machine customizable to any song, or even both?
